ONE VERSION OF THE SHABARI STORY
On their way southwards Rama and Laxmana passed through many difficult terrain. The forests were sparsely populated. Occasionally one encountered an ashrama of a sage with a small village around it. One such ashrama belonged to rishi Matang whose heart grieved for the lowly and downtrodden.

In his ashrama, one tribal devotee of Rama, named Shabri, used to stay. She used to keep the place clean and tidy, and along with that she also performed her japa - repeating the holy name of GOD, did her ritualistic worship by offering flowers etc., and sang many songs in the glory of the Lord. Her chosen ideal was Rama for whose meeting she was waiting for long time.

Years passed by; Rishi Matang became old. When he was on his death-bed, he called Shabari near him and said, "Look, O devotee of Rama, your tapasya - austerities - and spiritual longing for Rama would not go in vain. Sri Rama is sure to visit this ashrama, this I can say on the basis of my spiritual power. Therefore, after my departure, I plead you to wait for Rama's arrival. Hence take charge of this ashrama and live in peace and as a devotee of Rama. Your efforts would be rewarded in due course of time." So saying the rishi passed away.

Simple hearted, poor, and belonging to lower caste, Shabari did not know much about running the ashrama. Soon everyone left her. The birds, the flowers, the shrubs and occasional domesticated animal became her friends. But she had full faith in the words of her Guru Matang. When he had said Sri Rama would come to that ashrama, she could not disbelieve those words.

Hence Shabari used to clean the place early in the morning, collect fruits, and would wait looking at the distant road for her Rama to come. Every day this was her routine. Every day she thought "Rama would definitely come today!" In these days of eager wait and expectation of seeing her Rama, she forgot all about her rituals, worship, japa or songs! She forgot about day and night, month and year as well as the seasons. Rains were replaced by the winter, winter turned into summer of scorching heat, but Shabari had lost her interest in everything. For her the sun rose with the definite hope that her Rama would come that day and she would be able to serve him.
These long years of wait turned Shabari into an old woman. Her eye sight became dim and the hearing was affected. She had no remorse. She continued to keep her tiring body busy in her routine of cleaning the ashrama and collecting fruits for Rama.

Sonia strategists are exploiting to the maximum the frustration of the Anti-Narendra Modi Dissidents in Gujarat.

Sonia’s henchmen have offered Congress Party Tickets to every defecting BJP leader.

The BSP of Mayawati will chip away at the traditional Congress Vote Base of Dalits,.

Congress strategists therefore hope that there will be a flood of Ticket Seekers among the desperate BJP leaders angry with Narendra Modi.

Gujarat went out of the Congress fold in 1990 when the coalition between late Chimanbhai Patel as the leader of the Janata Dal and the BJP got the mandate to rule the state. The BJP came to power in 1995.

Dissident BJP leaders in Gujarat on Thursday said they need the Congress’ help to defeat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and prevent a triangular contest during Assembly elections in December.

Leading dissident BJP leaders Gordhan Zadaphia and Suresh Mehta met at the resident of former chief minister Keshubhai Patel in Delhi 24 hours after the Election Commission announced polls in the state.

“We require the Congress’ help and support to fight Narendra Modi in Gujarat. We will not let this fight become a triangular fight,” Zadaphia said after the meeting.

It is still not clear how the dissident BJP leaders will take on Modi: Whether they’ll form a separate political outfit or formally join hands with the Congress.

Patel, a former Gujarat Chief Minister who leads the rebellion against Modi in the BJP, too is yet to make up his mind on whether he would join the Congress or continue his fight independently.

A recent survey shows Modi leading in 150 out of the 182 constituencies.
This exceeds the 126 seats he won the last time.

The first phase of polls in Gujarat will be on December 11 and the second round will take place on December 16. Counting of votes will take place on December 26. The model code of conduct has come into effect in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh

Assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh will be held in two phases on December 11 and 16 and November 11 and December 19 respectively, the Election Commission announced today, slightly advancing the schedule in the hill state on account of weather conditions.

Counting of votes in Gujarat would be taken up on December 23, while in Himachal Pradesh it would be on December 28. Electronic voting machines will be deployed.

The term of the 182-member assembly in Gujarat expires on December 26 and the 68-member House in Himachal Pradesh on March nine next year.

Announcing the election schedule, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami told a press conference that the model code of conduct would come into force immediately and it would be applicable to all candidates, political parties, the state governments concerned and the union government.

The elections in Gujarat will be the second to be held after the post-Godhra violence of early 2001 and the Chief Election Commissioner gave an assurance that the people belonging to minority community still living in camps will be enabled to exercise their franchise without fear.

Asked why elections in Gujarat were being held only in two phases while it was a case of multi-phased in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, he said the requirement and approach in deployment of paramilitary forces was "different".

In Himachal Pradesh, the snow-bound constituencies of Kinnaur, Bharmour and Lahaul-Spiti will be held before the rest of the state as the mountain passes in these areas usually close down in November 15 due to winter and snowfall and become inaccessible.

This has been done in view of the demand of the people that elections in the three constituencies with the rest of the state and not later.
